Eurogamer readers' top 50 games of 2021

2021 has been another extremely unusual year, so hopefully it's a bit of a treat to end it in our usual way - with the top fifty games of the last twelve months, as chosen by you.
What we said: "I wasn't expecting Days Gone to add anything new to the genre, but both in terms of its systems and its story it's uninspired, which is driven home by the fact that it's endlessly, needlessly long. I'm begging you, haven't we done this enough?"

Eurogamer's game of the year is…

It has been 12 months, or as some might say a year, and there have been video games. In fact, looking at Eurogamer's top 10 of the year as well as your own top 50, it's clear there have been some mighty fine video games too, undermining the impression that 2021's been something of a lull for the industry.
Yes, there might not have been so many big ticket titles, and yes we're having to wait until next year for the likes of Breath of the Wild's sequel, Starfield, Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West, but we've not been short of crowd pleasing headliners.

This Christmas I'm going back to the house where I grew up. It's been more than 15 years since I moved out, and so it is now very definitely my parents' house and not my own - but part of me will always think of it as home.

2021 in review: Samus returns, or how a double-A games provided some of the year's big showstoppers

Hello! Over the next few days we're going to be going back over some of our favourite games and moments and themes and whatnot from this very strange year. We hope you enjoy looking back with us!
It has been, the story goes, a quiet sort of year for video games. After the fun and festivities of 2020, which against the backdrop of a pandemic somehow saw two new consoles being released, there's been a lethargy to 2021 - a Boxing Day fug as we're caught in the liminal buffer between the big launch year and 2022, where every big release has seemingly been delayed to.
This versatile QHD Dell monitor is down to £299

It's sometimes difficult finding the right monitor, where you want to balance a high-resolution that's above the standard 1080p HD fare, but also capable of taking your gaming experience above and beyond with extra features. The 27" Dell S2721DGFA monitor means you no longer have to make a choice anymore, and it's down to just £299 at Amazon right now, a fifth off its usual RRP.
First off, let's state the obvious: it's a QHD 1440p IPS screen. That means you're getting the sweet-spot between standard full HD and 4K resolutions, with excellent viewing angles and clarity. Many mid-range and high-powered GPUs can take advantage of this resolution when it comes to gaming, as well as consoles, with many games optimised for QHD. Next up: it has a 165Hz refresh rate. This means the screen can keep up with games that are optimised for fast gameplay, such as online shooters and e-sports games. Not only is this perfect for many hardcore PC gamers, but even games like Call of Duty on the new Xbox Series or PS5 consoles support up to 120 frames a second. This translates to you not missing out on any details that are happening at high-speed, giving you an advantage over others.

Best PS5 deals December 2021

The console has now been out for just over a year (and still frankly difficult to get hold of) but that hasn't stopped us from trying to gather all the best PS5 deals across games, accessories and more.
If you've been fortunate to get your hands on Sony's cutting-edge console then of course you'll want some games to play on it besides the excellent preinstalled Astro's Playroom. While we're still in the early years of cross-gen releases, there's nonetheless been a wide range of games available - whether via download or disc - including renowned exclusives, indie darlings and major blockbusters. We'll be updating this page regularly to keep you instantly in the know on where to find the best PS5 deals during the festive period. If you're looking for gift inspiration, you should also check out our gamer gift guide.
Best Xbox deals for December 2021

The new consoles are now firmly here and present (despite stock not being quite as easy to find), and whether you've managed to grab a new Xbox already, are getting ready to grab one soon or you're simply building on your lovable library of Xbox One games, there's a lot to pick from. And though the new consoles aren't likely to be discounted soon, the fact that most of the games will carry over means you can grab a deal on bestsellers now, or stack up on the best subscriptions like Xbox Game Pass or Xbox Live Gold for the near future.
So whether you're looking for a new Xbox Series X or S, Xbox games, controllers, Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions or accessories, there are plenty of great deals to tuck into this month. If you're looking for gift inspiration, you should also check out our Christmas gift guide.

2021 in review: Ruminating on 15 years of RuneScape

Hello! We're still catching up with our memories and moments of 2021. Here's Lottie considering a long career in Runescape.
I like to joke about how, for me, RuneScape is less of a game and more of a lifestyle choice; though, after 15 years, I should probably admit to myself that this joke is bordering on the realm of fact.

2021 in review: Getting lost in Death's Door's final secrets

Hello! Over the next few days we're going to be going back over some of our favourite games and moments and themes and whatnot from this very strange year. We hope you enjoy looking back with us!
Spoiler warning - this piece goes into how Death's Door's end-game works. It's intentionally light on specifics, but it's highly recommended you experience the moments after the credits yourself first, of course - it's one of the best games of the year, after all, as our Death's Door review explains.
A big Eurogamer Christmas reading list to carry you through to the New Year

Hello, Bertie here, sitting in my armchair next to the fire. Here we are at the end of the year. I hope it holds some good memories for you. I also hope you manage to find some time to yourself, as the year closes, to rest and restore yourself to your dazzling best.
We've had a busy year on Eurogamer. Never is this more apparent than when I'm staring an enormous pile of pieces in the face, hoping to make some kind of list out of them. I like these lists because people miss things in the rush of the year. I miss things. And this season provides a chance to look back and highlight some of the great work gone by.

Welcome to part-two of my end of year reading list - part one was published yesterday. It's a list that highlights the writers we're really lucky to publish on Eurogamer, and without whom, the website would not be the same. I hope you saved some space after yesterday's feast, and remember, if there's a writer who really clicks with you, then return the favour and click on their name next to their author portrait, to go to their author page. There, you'll find many more pieces by them. I hope you enjoy the platter before you.

2021 in review: Before I Forget? I'll remember this masterpiece for a long time.

Hello! We're continuing our look at some of the most memorable games and moments of 2021. Here's Henry.
I had to remind myself about this year's releases before choosing a moment that impacted me. Sinking countless hours into older JRPGs (looking at you Trails) didn't help matters, and even the most generous editor would struggle accepting that. As a reviewer, I've gone through numerous big releases and had some fantastic experiences. Seeing the Great Ace Attorney finally localised is up there, Metroid's 2D return was magnificent, and Mario Party continues infuriating my very core. Choosing a major gaming moment was tough, yet when I considered Before I Forget, there was no contest.

Corsair's premium HS75 XB wireless headset is just £103 on Amazon

Gaming headsets have become near necessities for any gaming set up these days. Besides the need to communicate with your teammates about where enemies may be lurking during an online round of Call of Duty, so many games fine tune their audio for headset use, sometimes outright recommending it.
Corsair is a known and trusted brand in the gaming accessories space, and their headsets are always worth a look at. The HS75 XB is no different, as it's wirelessly tuned to work perfectly with Xbox consoles and PC, and it's down to just £103 over at Amazon right now. That's well over a third off the standard retail price of £170.

Xbox Series X is in stock at Amazon UK at RRP

The Xbox Series X is a powerful next-gen console with access to a massive amount of current and last-gen games via Game Pass, but finding one has proven difficult - even Microsoft couldn't find enough units to run a Halo tournament. Now though, the Xbox Series X is in stock - and seems to be staying in stock - at Amazon UK, where you pick up the console for its £449 RRP, no bundle required.
If you're interested, there are also some bundles available - and these may be a good backup choice if the console alone sells out. Right now we can see two game bundles in stock: one with the Series X and Back 4 Blood for £475, and the other with the Series X and Far Cry 6 for £488. Both are good recent games at a fair price, so they're not a bad option if the non-bundled Series X sells out by the time you read this. Next day delivery is available on the bundles and on the standard Xbox Series X, so if you're looking to get the console before Christmas you're in luck.

Sherlock Holmes Chapter One gets first "major bonus story" DLC Beyond a Joke

If you've been enjoying your time sleuthing around the sunny, Mediterranean-inspired climes of Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, you might be interested to know that developer Frogwares has just released a brand-new case to crack in the form of its Beyond a Joke DLC.
Beyond a Joke, which is out now on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5, serves up a new quest - the first of "three major bonus story content additions", as Frogwares puts it - in which young Sherlock Holmes and his chiselled jawline go on the hunt for an "unstoppable" thief targeting the island of Cordona's ultra-rich "with brazen gusto and open mockery".

Ernie Hudson says new Ghostbusters game is "definitely happening"

Actor Ernie Hudson, perhaps better known as Ghostbusters' Ray Winston, has claimed a new video game based on the legendary movie series is "definitely happening".
This isn't the first time we've heard word of a new Ghostbusters game, of course; back in October, Raphael Saadiq, the co-founder of Friday the 13th and Predator: Hunter Grounds developer Illfonic, let slip that the studio was currently working on the title. Unsurprisingly though, given that the game is still yet to be officially announced, Saadiq hasn't offered any update since, leaving movie fans uncertain of the project's status.

Ubisoft's long-delayed new Settlers game will be sharing "some news" in January

If you've been eagerly awaiting news of the next instalment in the nearly three-decade-old Settlers series, your patience will soon be awarded: publisher Ubisoft has announced it'll be revealing more information on the long-delayed game in January next year.
Ubisoft first revealed it would be revisiting the Settlers' much-loved city-building and real-time strategy formula in a new series instalment back in 2018. At the time, it told fans to expect the title in autumn the following year but, as that window grew near, the publisher announced a delay, pushing the game's release into 2020.

The Queen and the Sea, which follows previous paid expansions The Bad Seed and Fatal Falls, brings a touch of the nautical to Dead Cells' acclaimed action, introducing new enemies, bosses, weapons, and two brand-new biomes - Infested Shipwreck and the Lighthouse - that'll run parallel to the existing High Peak Castle and Throne Room late-game stages.

Detention and Devotion developer announces Sekiro-inspired action-platformer Nine Sols

Red Candle Games, the developer behind critically acclaimed horror outings Detention and Devotion, has - following a bit of an animated tease earlier this year - formally announced its latest title, an action-platformer loosely inspired by From Software's superb Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice that's currently going by the name of Nine Sols.
Details are extremely limited right now, but Red Candle describes Nine Sols (a working title at present) as a "lore rich hand-drawn 2D platformer with Sekiro-inspired deflection-focused combat". The developer has also shared a wonderfully evocative bit of promo art that - while a significant aesthetic departure from its previous games - does suggest, with its mangled limbs and pools of blood, that we're not exactly in family friendly territory here.

Card horror Inscryption's free mini-expansion turns Act 1 into an endless rogue-like

Inscryption, the acclaimed deck-building horror game from Pony Island and The Hex developer Daniel Mullins, is getting a free new mini-expansion that will turn its devilishly enjoyable opening act into an endless, rogue-like experience.
As with Mullins' previous creations, Inscryption - a dizzyingly strange blend of deck-building rogue-like, escape-room puzzler, and psychological horror - loves to surprise, which inevitably means some deviation away from its opening portion, a engaging combination of sharply designed card battling and Slay-the-Spire-style map progression.

Microsoft recalls time it rejected Rockstar's pitch to put GTA3 on the original Xbox

As part of its fascinating Power On documentary series released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Xbox, Microsoft has discussed the time it rejected Rockstar's pitch to put Grand Theft Auto 3 on the original Xbox back in 2001 - a decision that would ultimately lead to the multi-million-selling phenomenon being snapped up by Sony as a timed exclusive.
The story, which follows similarly candid recollections from Microsoft in Power On - including the admission its closure of Fable developer Lionhead Studios was one of the company's "biggest missteps" - comes in the third episode. Here, various members of the original Xbox team discuss Microsoft's preparations for the console's launch, which saw the group going on a "barnstorming tour" across America, Europe, and Japan to build excitement and convince developers its machine could be a success.

There's a free PlayStation Plus online multiplayer trial happening this weekend

If you're curious about PlayStation Plus but haven't yet become a member - or have no intention of ever becoming a member, but have a sudden urge to play some online multiplayer games all the same - Sony is giving players two days to trial the subscription service this weekend.
PlayStation Plus, should you be unfamiliar, is required to play the vast majority of PlayStation 4 and PS5 multiplayer games online (although free-to-play titles such as Fortnite are excluded), and, as an extra incentive to subscribe, offers a monthly selection of games to add to your library for the duration of a membership at no extra cost.
Off Topic: An end-of-the-year miracle!

I have an update for a story I published a while back LINK. It was a self-indulgent story, and it's a self-indulgent update. Apologies very much in advance.
Back in October I wrote a piece about a painting I really love - Capriccio: St Paul's and a Venetian Canal, by William Marlow. It's an obscure painting - it's held in the Tate's collection but it's rarely on display - and Marlow is an obscure painter. I have googled gently over the twenty years since I saw the painting and have seen a few of his pieces, most of them sort of fine but not particularly memorable.

If you've still got some last-minute Christmas shopping to do and you've got the Nintendo Switch OLED on your shopping list, Amazon has reduced its price to £305.07

Ex-BioWare boss Aaryn Flynn sings all about Nightingale

More than three years after departing BioWare and later founding his own studio, Aaryn Flynn's next project has finally been announced. The former BioWare boss turned up on stage at last week's Game Awards to show off Nightingale, a "shared-world survival crafting game" - the first project from Inflexion Games.
But while that trailer gave us a good idea of Nightingale's alternate history fantasy setting, it gave less away on what the game will actually be like to play - and what might have changed since it was originally teased as an online multiplayer RPG.

Campaign level select in Halo Infinite is "challenging" but 343 Industries is "working" on it

The opportunity to replay campaign modes in Halo Infinite is "coming later", according to 343 Industries associate creative director, Paul Crocker.

This might be the most advanced F1 sim commercially available

At some point later this afternoon in Abu Dhabi, history will be made. Whether Lewis Hamilton clinches his eighth title and pulls clear of the record seven crowns claimed by Michael Schumacher or Max Verstappen takes his first remains to be seen, but whatever the result we're about to witness the end of an era. With a new ruleset designed to bunch the pack up and slow them down - temporarily, at least - we're about to say farewell to the fastest racing cars to have ever graced the planet.
So it's somewhat timely we've just received what I'm certain is the most advanced F1 sim commercially available, thanks to the partnership between iRacing and the Mercedes AMG Team that saw the W12 E arrive to the service earlier this week. I can't pretend to have much by way of first-hand experience of this most muscular iteration of the hybrid era, but I've been lucky enough to be trackside a few times and this certainly brings the supernatural speed and performance of the fastest F1 cars ever to life more vividly than any other title.

Sniper Elite 5 gets first trailer and is launching next year

Following its blink-and-you'll-miss it debut during this year's Game Awards, developer Rebellion has officially revealed Sniper Elite 5, which will be making its way to Xbox, PlayStation, and PC some time next year.
As you'd expect, Sniper Elite 5 will deliver more of the series' "unparalleled tactical sniping", as Rebellion puts it, alongside an enhanced version of the iconic kill cam, said to be "more realistic and grisly than ever". All that comes with a shift in location, with Sniper Elite 5's WW2 yarn taking the series away from Italy circa 1943, as seen in the previous game, to the France of 1944.

Best PS4 deals for games and accessories in December 2021

Now that the PS5 has settled in as the new console generation, you might think it would be a good time to make a saving on a PS4 this Christmas. However, stock shortages during the pandemic and the fact that all but the PS4 slim models have been officially discontinued by Sony, means new PS4 consoles are actually just as hard to find. On the other hand, those who have a console already can still take advantage of some amazing deals on PS4 games and accessories we've found here.
Some of this month's highlights includePersona 5 Royal for £16.85, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year Edition for £13.89 and a 12 month PlayStation Plus membership for for £41.85.
Gears of War's Marcus Fenix and Kait Diaz are heading to Fortnite

Gears of War's Marcus Fenix and Kait Diaz are the latest characters to be uprooted from their usual homes and shoved into the metaversal nightmare that is Fortnite, with both arriving in the free-to-play battle royale game later today.
It's not entirely clear what the occasion is - although a quick Google tells me Gears of War is currently celebrating its 15 year, one month, and two day anniversary, so perhaps that's a thing - but Fenix and Diaz will both be available as paid skins in the Fortnite store from 7pm ET this evening, which equates to 12am, 10th December in the UK.
